Isaac Watt Boulton

Isaac Watt Boulton (* 1823 in Stockport, † June 1899 ) was a British engineer and founder of the locomotive hire business Boulton 's Siding.

Life

Boulton was born in Stockport in England. He was the son of John Boulton from Glossop, who was related to Matthew Boulton Boulton & Watt. Boulton had four sons (one of them named James Watt Boulton ) and a daughter.

Work

1841 Boulton began an apprenticeship in the Sheffield, Ashton -under- Lyne and Manchester Railway under Richard Peacock. Later he entered the canal boat his father's business and stayed there until 1845.

He then founded an engineering firm from which little is known except that he built at least one steam car (probably similar to that of Richard Trevithick and Goldsworthy Gurney ) and at least one steam boat.

In 1854, he worked in the locomotive department of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, the locomotive works in Gorton. He left in 1856 and started another engineering business in the Portland Street in Ashton -under- Lyne, where he built steam engines of various types and repaired.

Between 1858 and 1859 he bought three steam locomotives second hand ( 2-2 -0- tender locomotives, built by Bury, Curtis and Kennedy) and began to temporarily rent. Grew The locomotive leasing and so connects to the nearest railway line was required. This led in 1864 to the construction of Boulton 's Siding along the Oldham branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway.
