Life and work

Israel Crosby first learned trumpet and then went 1934 on the bass. He played at the beginning of his musical career in 1935/36 with Albert Ammons in Chicago; there also emerged recordings with Roy Eldridge, Jess Stacy, Jimmie Noone and Gene Krupa, with whom he recorded in 1935 Blues Of Israel. From 1936 to 1938 he was a member of the band of Fletcher Henderson, where he replaced John Kirby; thereafter, he played in the bands of Horace Henderson ( 1940) and Teddy Wilson. In smaller settings under eigenemn name and with Edmond Hall Quartet ( Profoundly Blue 1941), Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman, Chu Berry, Art Hodes, Coleman Hawkins in 1944, Jimmy Yancey, Georgie Auld and Bill Russo Crosby recorded numerous records. 1951 to 1953 he played in a trio of Ahmad Jamal ( The Three strings), one of the important piano trio of the time; then he worked for Benny Goodman. In 1956 he again went to Jamal, with whom he whose 1958 album At The Pershing recorded.

Ahmad Jamal Trio solved the 1962 and Israel Crosby moved briefly to a quintet of pianist George Shearing, but Crosby fell seriously ill at heart. At the age of 43 years before embarking on a trip to Europe, he died of a heart attack. George Shearing said of his colleagues: he was one of the most inspiring musicians with whom I played. In the trio of Ajmal Jamal in which was plenty of room for the soloists development of the rhythm section, the co-founder of modern bass playing could fully develop his melodic gift and his bearing, organ same tone. His playing style in the tradition of Jimmy Blanton, in a row with bassist John Kirby, Walter Page or Milt Hinton, became the model for subsequent bassists Wilbur Ware.
