The private non- profit organization Istituto Affari Internazionali, short IAI ( German: Institute for International Relations ), was established in 1965 on the initiative by the Spinelli, the first director, and with the support of the Fondazione Olivetti, cultural and political association Il Mulino, of the Centro studi Nord e Sud and the Ford Foundation founded. Spinelli established the international research along the lines of Anglo-Saxon Think Tank: a private organization with a flexible structure that differs from university departments and research centers, public institutions and ministries, but is able to work effectively with the government, the public administration, the leading national economic actors as well as to interact and collaborate the most prestigious foreign research centers.

Since 1991, the Institute in the elegant Palazzo Rondinini is housed, the. Onto the Baroque period in Rome in the 16th century back and in the space dedicated to the most important events of the facility. The IAI has three main objectives: research, develop policy ideas and strategies as well as training and promoting understanding of international problems.

Research

The Institute is concerned primarily with the following research areas:

  • Institutions and policies of the European Union
  • Turkey
  • Defence Policy and Economics
  • Transatlantic Relations
  • Mediterranean and Middle East
  • International Economic
  • Italian foreign policy

The research is carried out by a scientific team, which consists of about 30 researchers; which act as Project 10 or Division Manager. The majority of the research projects will be implemented in collaboration with foreign institutions of similar structure.

In addition, the Institute is an active member, and sometimes also the initiator of various major international research networks:

Publications

The Institute publishes various journals and monographs:

  • The International Spectator, a quarterly peer -reviewed journal ( judged by experts - products ) for International Policy in English, published since 2007 by the publishing house Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group)
  • IAI Research Papers and Quaderni IAI ( German: IAI research and IAI - books ), two collections of monographs either in English or in Italian, on issues of international politics and economy with which the Institute is dealing, as well as to further particularly topical issues
  • IAI Working Papers IAI and Documenti, working papers in English or in Italian
  • AffarInternazionali ( German: International Relations ), an online journal for politics, strategy and business
