István Tóth (wrestler)

István Tóth ( born October 3, 1951 in Szolnok ) is a former Hungarian wrestler. He was the silver medalist at the Olympic Games in 1980 and world champion in 1979 and 1981 in the Greco-Roman featherweight.

Career

István Tóth began as a teenager with the rings. He belonged to the Egri Vasas Birkózó club ( Ringer club Vasas Eger). István Tóth got in the Hungarian national team wrestler, in which it was established in 1975, by national coach Csaba Hegedus the finishing touches to a world-class wrestler. Hungarian Champion was Tóth who wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style, for the first time in 1973 at featherweight. But until his first appearance at an international championship he had to wait until 1976, because it was the Hungarian László Réczi Wrestling Federation, which was very successful on the wrestling mat internally, preferred. At the European Championships in 1976 in Leningrad Tóth won featherweight just a fight and had to settle for 9th place.

His next assignment was only then at the European Championships 1978 in Oslo. This time Tóth showed very good fights and won with four wins the bronze medal. He won so over the highly favored Kazimierz Lipień from Poland. Lipień but was still champions because Tóth lost against the Romanians Ion Păun.

1979 Tóth became vice European champions after a final battle defeat by Stylianos Migiakis from Greece in Bucharest. The World Cup of the same year was even more successful for him because he was with five wins world champion.

At the Olympic Games in 1980 Tóth reach and Others victories over the world-class athletes Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and Boris Kramarenko from the USSR. But in the battle for the gold medal he lost again his nemesis Stylianos Migiakis. In this struggle, both wrestlers were with two warnings for passivity shortly before the disqualification. The judges decided but then a few seconds before the end of the fight not to grant Tóth the third warning of what this cost the Olympic victory. For István Tóth a very hard decision.

1981 Tóth, who had overcome the disappointment of Moscow was, for the second time world featherweight champion. In the final he defeated while the Poland Ryszard Świerad 7-6 points. 1982 won Tóth then at the European Championships in Varna with the 3rd place in the featherweight his last coin.

In 1984, he launched yet without success at the European Championships in Jönköping, but then withdrew from the international competition scene, particularly since Hungary had the Olympic boycott of Los Angeles joined the Eastern Bloc countries.
