Italo Santelli

Italo Santelli ( born August 15, 1866 in Carrodano, Italy, † February 8, 1945 in Livorno ) was an Italian fencer who is considered the father of modern Säbelfechtens.

Life

Santelli studied at the famous Italian schools, including at the Scuola Magistrale of Rome and in 1896 appointed fencing master. In that year he moved with his brother Otello, also a fencer, and his wife moved to Budapest where he had a son in 1897. In Hungary Santelli developed a new style of Säbelfechtens, who was aligned defensive and became known as "modern style of Santelli '.

This is the style that he introduced before at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 and therefore won the silver medal in saber fight, his team-mate Antonio Conte won the gold medal. At foil, he has only been seventh.

As a fencing instructor, he taught, among others, Aladar Gerevich and his own son Giorgio Santelli, who in 1920 won a gold medal with the Italian saber team.
