Ittefaq Group

The Ittefaq Group is a Pakistani steel company and the largest industrial conglomerate in Punjab. The Group also includes paper and textile industry.

Muhammad Sharif, the later industrial tycoon and father of politician Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif, founded in 1939 in the Indian Punjab along with his six brothers, a foundry, moved to the War of Independence in 1947 to Pakistan. Under Prime Minister Ali Bhutto, the steel industry was nationalized in 1972 and the family to the core of Ittefaq Group. After the military coup led by General Zia -ul- Haq, who was politically close to the Sharif family, the plants were returned to them in 1980.

In the 1980s and 1990s expanded greatly and now includes, in addition Ittefaq foundries another 30 companies that also produce sugar, paper and textiles except cast iron and steel. Consolidated net profit is estimated to be about $ 400 million.
