Shahbaz Sharif

Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif ( میاں محمد شہباز شریف; born September 23, 1951 in Lahore ) is a Pakistani political leader of the influential Sharif family. He is since 2008 head of government of the province of Punjab, but had this position before the military coup in 1999 held.

Biography

Shahbaz Sharif is the son of industrialist Muhammad Sharif and the younger brother of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He is a member of the Pakistani Muslim League - Nawaz (PML -N) and was on February 2, 1997 the first Chief Minister of Punjab. This post he held for two and a half years initially until 10 October 1999.

After Nawaz Sharif was overthrown as prime minister by General Pervez Musharraf in a military coup on 12 October 1999 and went into exile in Saudi Arabia, his brother followed him into exile. On August 3, 2002, he was the successor of Nawaz Sharif as president of the PML -N, but remained with his family still in Saudi Arabia. In May 2004, he tried to return to Pakistan. But he was arrested when landing at the airport of Lahore and refused to Saudi Arabia.

However in November 2007 he returned to a saying of the Supreme Court returned with his brother to Pakistan. After the elections in Punjab in June 2008, he succeeded with the Pakistan People's Party ( Pakistan People's Party, PPP) as junior partners to form a coalition government, so that he in turn was Chief Minister of Punjab on 8 June 2008. It was a reversal of the coalition with the PPP in the central government in which is provided with Yousaf Raza Gilani of the PPP, the Prime Minister. On 25 February 2009 he was removed by a decision of the Supreme Court ( Supreme Court of Pakistan) his office.

By a decision of 31 March 2009, the Supreme Court decision, however, picked up again, so that Shahbaz Sharif was able to take office as Chief Minister of Punjab again on the same day.
