Ivan Fomin

Ivan Aleksandrovich Fomin (Russian: Иван Александрович Фомин, scientific transliteration Ivan Aleksandrovich Fomin; * 22 Januarjul / February 3 1872greg in Oryol, .. † June 12, 1936 in Moscow) was a Russian- Soviet architect.

Life

Ivan Fomin studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1894 to 1897 and from 1905 to 1909 Architecture and etching. After he was expelled from the Academy in 1897 for participating in a student revolt, he worked in Moscow as an assistant to the architect Lew Kekushev and Fyodor Schechtel.

In his early period, he was influenced by Art Nouveau. At the beginning of the 20 th century Fomin increasingly engaged with the architectural heritage of Russia and became an advocate of Russian classicism. In 1911 he organized the " Historic Architecture Exhibition" in Saint Petersburg.

Ivan Fomin regarded as the founder of neo-classicism in Russian architecture. He was looking for the connection of the classical with the modern architecture and advocated the creation of a "proletarian Classic ", which in Stalin's monumental style culminated later. In the 1910s, he developed several urban development projects, which were not realized. 1920-23 he worked on the planning of the development and greening of the Petrograd Mars field. In 1919 he was chairman of the Architectural services for the planning authority of Petrograd. In the 1930s he taught at the Leningrad Academy of Arts from 1933 and was head of the architecture school of the studios Mossoviet. Among his pupils were Alexandr Gegello, EA Levinson, WO Munz and Noi Trotsky. In the 1930s, Fomin was one of the most important architects of Socialist Classicism.
