Ivan III Drašković

Ivan III. Count Draskovic Trakošćan ( German Johann, Hungarian János; * March 13, 1595 () or 1603 Trakošćan, Croatia; ? † August 5, 1648 in Olováry, District Velky Krtíś, Slovakia) was a Croatian nobleman, military leader and statesman from the home Draskovic. He was Ban ( viceroy ) of Croatia from 1640 bis 1646.

Life

Ivan III. Draskovic was born the son of Ivan II Baron Draskovic and his wife Eva Draskovic born Istvánffy baroness of Baranyavar and Kissasszonyfalva. His father (* 1550 - † 1613 ) was the Ban of Croatia (from 1596-1608 ) and Emperor Rudolf II chamberlain, privy and Hofkriegsrat, general of the cavalry and Lord Lieutenant of the county Kreutzer known.

On January 29, 1629, he married, still as Baron, Barbara Thurzos, Countess of Bethel Village (Hungarian: Bethlenfalvi Thurzó Slovak:, :. Turzo Betlanoviec z ), and they had five children: Ivan IV, Barbara, Nicholas II, Katarina and Julia.

Draskovic studied philosophy in Graz ( Austria ) and law in Bologna ( Italy ), where he spoke several foreign languages. During his life, the noble family Draskovic reached the peak of its power, wealth and influence. Since he has been successful in many battles against the Turks, he was known as " defensor Croatiae " (defender of Croatia ). He tried to improve the organization of the defense and made at the same time that new fortifications built and renovated many old military bases and have been reinforced.

Because of his efforts and achievements he and the other members of his family on September 4, 1631 by Emperor and King Ferdinand II of Habsburg was elevated to the rank of count. In his life was Draskovic, among other things, Captain, royal chamberlain and a privy councilor. On July 10, 1640, he was named Emperor and King Ferdinand III. the Ban of Croatia and commander of the Croatian Military Frontier in Karlovac.

On September 22, 1646, Ferdinand III summoned. the General Assembly of the Croatian and Hungarian nobility in Pressburg and told there that Draskovic was appointed Palatine of Hungary. This was Ivan III. Draskovic, the first Croat who ( according to the king ) wore this top Hungarian title. Relatively short time after he died on August 5, 1648 in the village Olováry (district Velky Krtíś in today's Slovakia) and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Martin in Bratislava, next to his father Ivan Draskovic II.
