Ivan Martos

Ivan Petrovich Martos (Russian: Иван Петрович Мартос; * 1754 Itschnja, now Ukraine, .. † 5 Apriljul / April 17 1835greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian sculptor.

Life and work

Martos attended from 1764 to 1773, first the Russian Art Academy, after which he went to Rome and studied with Pompeo Batoni, Anton Raphael Mengs and Bertel Thorvaldsen. Martos was considered one of the most important representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian sculpting the time of Alexander I. He created many grave and monuments, inspired by the style of classicism. One of his best known works is the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky in front of St Basil's Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow.
