Ivan Tavčar

Ivan Tavčar ( born August 28, 1851 in Poljane nad Škofjo Loko, † February 19, 1923 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovene writer, jurist and politician.

Tavčar was the oldest of eight children in a peasant family. After attending high school, he studied from 1871 to 1875 Jura in Vienna. In 1883 he was admitted to the bar in Trieste, and in 1984 he opened a Anwaltskanzle in Ljubljana, which he ran until his death. In the same year he married Franja Kosenini. Her house was a center of the national- liberal bourgeoisie of the city.

At the same time Tavčar began to press in local politics, first as a councilor and from 1909 as vice mayor. In 1911 he was elected mayor of Ljubljana; he knew this office until 1921. 1889 he was among the founders of the City Savings Bank of Ljubljana and was their legal advisor. In 1900 he was elected to the board of the Bank, whose president he became in 1916. In addition Tavčar was active in various cultural associations of the city, which distinguished him on his 70th birthday in 1921 as an honorary citizen. When his main literary work is considered the Visoška kronika, a historical novel about the aftermath of the Thirty Years War.
