Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri

Ivy Matsepe - Casaburri ( born September 18, 1937 in Kroonstad, † April 6, 2009 in Pretoria) was a South African politician.

Life

She earned her Bachelor of Arts at the Fort Hare University in Alice, Eastern Cape, before she accepted a teaching position in Natal. Shortly thereafter, she went into exile in Swaziland, Zambia, Namibia and USA, before returning to South Africa in 1990. During their stay in the U.S., she graduated as a Ph. D. in Sociology at Rutgers University.

From 1993 to 1996 she was chairman of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. She was the first woman and the first black man who occupied this position. They belonged to the African National Congress ( ANC ) and was 18 December 1996 to June 15, 1999 Prime Minister of the Free State Province. Again, she was the first woman who occupied this position. Since 1999 she was Minister of Telecommunications.

On 25 September 2008 she led - after the resignation Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe before the election - for about half a day the business of the president.
