Jaak Uudmäe

Jaak Uudmäe ( born September 3, 1954 in Tallinn) is a former Soviet athlete Estonian origin.

Career

Uudmäe fell for the first time at the 1979 Summer Universiade in international competitions at the stadium when he was able to win the silver medal in the triple jump. In our memory he is known as the triple jumper, who by his victory his team-mates Victor Sanejew prevented at the 1980 Olympic Games from becoming Olympic champion for the fourth time in a row. With the personal best of 17.35 m Uudmäe jumped at his Olympic victory, after all almost as far as its Sanejew at his Olympic victory in 1968 at the height of Mexico City.

He also won three medals at the European Indoor Athletics Championships. In 1977 he won silver with 16.46 meters behind Sanejew with 16.65 m. 1979 Uudmäe won bronze with 16.91 meters behind his two teammates Soviet Gennadi Waljukewitsch ( 17,02 m) and Anatoli Piskulin ( 16.97 m). In 1980 he won silver with 16.51 behind the Hungarian Béla Bakosi with 16,86 m. 1983 Uudmäe was 16.56 m again fifth in the European Indoor Championships.

1979 and 1980 Jaak Uudmäe was named Sportsman of the Year in the Estonian SSR. He is 1.90 m tall and weighed 73 kg in his playing days.

His son Jaanus Uudmäe (born 24 December 1980) is also athlete and Estonia has represented several international awards in the triple jump.
