Jaap Schröder

Jaap Schroeder ( born December 31, 1925 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch violinist and conductor.

Life and work

Jaap Schroeder studied violin with Jos de Clerck, at the Conservatory of his hometown and later in Paris at the École Jacques Thibaud with Joseph Calvet (1897-1984) and Jean Pasquier (1904-1992), he also studied musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris. After training he was concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Radio Hilversum. At the same time musician friends encouraged him to establish with them the "Nederlands Strijkkwartet " with this string quartet he gave numerous concerts in Europe and North America. In 1960 he founded the ensemble "Concerto Amsterdam ", of which he was. The conversion of the ensemble in a Baroque orchestra was about 1969.

So he pursued for 17 years career as a classical violinist, until, now belonging to the circle of musicians to Frans Brüggen and Gustav Leonhardt, grappled intensively from the late 1960s to the Baroque violin and historical performance practice. In 1973 he was invited to set up at the Schola Cantorum in a class of baroque violin. In 1975 he founded the " Esterházy Quartet " which has played to 1981 consisting, on original instruments. 1981 appointed him Christopher Hogwood as concertmaster of the Academy of Ancient Music.

In 1982 he was appointed for six years for the guest conductor of the newly formed " Smithsonian Chamber Players " in Washington.

Jaap Schroeder taught at numerous music faculties of American universities, such as Yale University, the University of Virginia and Maryland, as well as at the Peabody Conservatory, the Banff School of the Arts and the Conservatory of Luxembourg. He devoted himself intensively to the rediscovery of the forgotten violin literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Schroeder is a regular guest conductor with leading chamber ensembles.
