Jabodetabek

Jabotabek is the common acronym for the metropolitan area on the Indonesian island of Java, which is formed by the cities of Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi and their associated counties.

The name Jabotabek is composed of the initial letters of the four cities:

  • Jakarta
  • Bogor
  • Tangerang
  • Bekasi

Moreover, it also includes the city of Depok at the same metropolitan area, however it was not considered in the formation of the acronym.

With 23.6 million inhabitants (2005 ) is one of the largest Jabotabek metropolitan areas in the world. Jabotabek achieved a high rate of population growth, mainly through immigration from the rural regions of the country. The Government of Indonesia estimates the population of the metropolitan area in 2016 to 32 million. Of these, approximately twelve million people will be living alone in Jakarta.
