Jack Hirsh

Jack Hirsh ( born January 7, 1935 in Łódź, Poland or January 5, 1935 in Melbourne, Australia ) is a Canadian physician and Hämostaseologe ( blood clotting researcher) and Professor Emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Life

Hirsh came in 1936 to Melbourne, Australia. ( According to other sources, he was born there.) He graduated from the University of Melbourne a MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery ) and MD ( Professional Doctorate ) in medicine. Subsequently, he received further training at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, the London Postgraduate Medical School ( University of London, UK ) and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Hirsh went in 1973 to the McMaster University in Hamilton, where he was founding director of the Hamilton Civic Hospital Research Centre was established in 1988. In addition to his professorship, he was temporarily head of the entire internal medicine at McMaster University. Hirsh was also a partner and head of research at Vascular Therapeutics Inc. and other pharmaceutical companies. He was most recently director of the Henderson Research Centre, McMaster University, which was renamed in Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute ( TaARI ) 2010.

Work

Hirsch operation translational research and one of the leading figures of the Thrombosis Research. For one, he contributed to the development of low molecular weight heparins, on the other hand, he led the clinical studies proving its effectiveness by in deep vein thrombosis. Other merits are the improvement of coagulation tests for the control of oral anticoagulation - his work contributed to the introduction of the International Normalized Ratio (INR) - and participation in the proof of the preventive effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) against stroke and heart attack.
