Jack McAuliffe (boxer)

Jack McAuliffe ( born March 24, 1866 in Cork, Ireland, † November 5, 1937 in Forest Hills ) was an American boxer of Irish origin. He belongs with Young Mitchell, Jimmy Barry, Rocky Marciano, László Papp, Terry Marsh, Kim Ji-won, Ricardo Lopez and Sven Ottke to the boxers, which officially remained undefeated as professionals.

Career

McAuliffes family immigrated in his childhood to Maine. He began his career in 1884 in the bare- knuckle era. In 1886 he was a knockout against Billy Frazier in the 17th round U.S. champion at lightweight. The Irish -born Jack Dempsey (The Nonpareil ) took him under his wing.

The counter- boxer with pronounced reflections declared after a knockout over the Canadians Harry Gilmore 1887 world champion. That would not accept the English champions Jem Carney and on 16 November 1887, came to confrontation. As Carney McAuliffe was reflected in the 72nd round, the fans stormed the ring. Officially ended the fight a draw, but both boxers declared himself the winner.

1889 after 64 rounds fought McAuliffe draw against Billy Myer, but beat him later twice. Until 1893, he was recognized world champion. McAuliffe suggested in 1894 still a known opponent in Young Griffo and ended finally in 1897 his career.

In 1995, McAuliffe induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
