Jackie Lee Cochran ( born February 5, 1934 as Jack Cochran in Dalton, Georgia; † 15 March 1998 in California ) was an American rockabilly musician. His nickname was "Jack the Cat".

Life

Childhood and youth

Cochran had a died in the age of two twin. His father gave him a guitar for his sixth birthday. His parents, Luther and Jean led not a happy marriage, his father was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murder, so Cochran spent his childhood and youth, often with relatives in Louisiana, Meridian, Mississippi, and with his grandmother in Gadsden, Alabama. Cochran's father was pardoned after twelve years and then wandered off to Jamaica.

Career

In Gadsen Cockran made ​​initial contacts with the local music scene, what his grandmother but displeased because she wanted to bring her grandson in the military. So she urged Cochran to join the U.S. Air Force. Based in San Antonio, Cochran traveled every weekend to Abilene to occur in the radio show by Slim Willet. His performances brought a local in the attention of the management of the KRLD Big D Jamboree. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Big D Jamboree. When he was transferred to Selma, Alabama, he formed the country band The Flying C Ranch Boys, with whom he appeared in the evening in bars and restaurants as well as the radio station WBAM. After his discharge from the Air Force in 1955 was a member of Jimmy Cochran Swans Band in Hattiesburg. As Cochran performed together with the young Elvis Presley in New Orleans, he moved immediately to rockabilly.

Cochran hired the manager Pat O'Donnell, who built up the image of "Jack the Cat" to Cochran. By O'Donnell Cochran got a recording contract with Sims Records.
