History

After the release as the third single from the album in January 1987 the title was more successful and reached in March 1987 No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. These were about the third number-one success of the band in the United States.

The action described in the song takes place in Birmingham, Alabama. The song combines the biblical image of Jacob's ladder with a protagonist who must fight every day in his life:

On the B - side of the single, the live version of the song The Heart of Rock & Roll appeared.

Bruce Hornsby later took on its own version of the song, which was, however, less pop- oriented. This version was published in 1988 on his album Scenes from the Southside. He also recorded the song on his concert repertoire.
