Jacob Gretser

Jacob S. J. Gretser ( Born March 27, 1562 Mark village; † January 29, 1625 in Ingolstadt ) was an influential Latin philologist, historian, playwright and polemicist of the Counter-Reformation in Germany.

Life

Gretser Jacob was the son of Markdorfer mayor. Since 1576, he attended the Jesuit seminary in Innsbruck, where he was inducted into the Order in 1578. After short-term teaching assignments in Landsberg and Pont-à- Mousson in 1580, he was transferred to the Munich Jesuit High School. About Fribourg in 1584 he got the first time in 1586 to Ingolstadt, where he earned his master's degree in 1588 in philosophy. In 1589 he received the priesthood and was a theological student Gregory of Valencia ( 1549-1603 ), whose chair he took over in 1592 here.

Gretser authored more than a hundred Latin literature in various fields, especially in philology and church history. He translated and edited Greek authors, published a Greek grammar, wrote 23 Latin school dramas and made ​​significant contributions to the literature of the Counter-Reformation. Almost all of his Counter-Reformation writings were translated by his order brother Conrad cousin in folk bajuwarisch.

At the age of 63 years died Gretser 1625 in Ingolstadt.
