Jacob Praetorius

Jacob (also: Jacobus ) Praetorius, the younger, actually Jacob Schultz ( born February 8, 1586 Hamburg; † 21 or October 22, 1651 in Hamburg ) was a German organist and composer.

Jacob Praetorius ' grandfather Jacob Praetorius the Elder and his father Hieronymus Praetorius (1560-1629) was organist at the Church of St. Jacobi in Hamburg, he received his first lessons from his father.

As the successor of Henry thor moles Praetorius was already in 1604 at the age of 18 years as organist at Hamburg's St. Peter's Church, which he held until his death. According to the latest research to Praetorius went from 1606 for two years to Amsterdam to study with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, which he seems to have been one of its first students. Sweelinck composed a motet for Praetorius's wedding in 1608.

Jacob Praetorius had three sons and three daughters, his son Jerome was also a musician.

His compositional output includes mainly motets, pieces for organ and Galliards. In addition, he was taken on his job at the Hamburger St. Petri Church a name as a teacher of organ and composition. Praetorius was, inter alia, Contemporary of Heinrich Scheidemann, as his most important students are Matthias Weckmann and Berendt Petri to look at.
