The Jacob van Heemskerck - class is a class of frigates built for the Royal Netherlands Navy.

History

The frigates were developed in the 1970s as air defense ships on the basis of Kortenaer class out to particularly respond to threats by aircraft can. Draw on the experiences of the Falklands War played a role. The ships have, like most frigate designs of its time, a COGOG (Combined gas or gas) propulsion system.

A total of two ships of the Royal Schelde in Vlissingen were built 1981-1986.

After 19 years of service with the Dutch Navy's ships were sold to Chile in 2005.

Technology

The frigates of Jacob van Heemskerck - class are 130 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and displace with a draft of 4.4 meters maximum of 3800 tons standard.

The drive of the vessels is carried out by a COGOG system. Two Rolls- Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines, each with 4,900 hp are used at cruising speed to 20 knots, two Rolls- Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines each with 25,700 hp bring the ships at their top speed of 30 knots. The range is 4700 nautical miles at 16 knots cruising speed.

The tube - armament consists of a Goalkeeper short-range defense system.

For the anti-ship use, the frigates are equipped with two quad starter for RGM -84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Four torpedo tubes for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes complement the armament.

As the ships were built for use against air targets, they were armed particularly strong here so a Mk located in front of the bridge 29 octuple launcher for RIM -7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles, also was a starter Mk 13 for 40 Standard Missile aft installed. But did not prepare a hangar for helicopters.

A LW 08 Long Range Air Surveillance Radar and a WM25 search and tracking radar provide data for the SEWACO II computer system with Link 11 data link and satellite communications. A Scout navigation radar supports navigation of the ship. A Westinghouse AN/SQS-509-Bugsonar allows the detection of underwater targets.

Units

The ships were named after General Jacob van Heemskerk and the Admiral Witte de With.
