The Kortenaer class was a class frigate of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ships were sold to the end of its almost thirty years of service with the Dutch navy to Greece and the United Arab Emirates.

History

The frigates were designed in the seventies as a universal ships in order to respond to both threats from aircraft and submarines and warships can. They had, like most of their time a frigate designs COGOG (Combined gas or gas) propulsion system.

The eight ships of the German Navy F122 Class, built at the same time, are from the same design and are the Kortenaer class very similar.

A total of ten ships of the Royal Schelde in Vlissingen and two additional Wilton Fijenoord in Rotterdam were built 1975-1982. Of these, two were sold during the construction phase Elli class to the Greek Navy and the Netherlands replaced by two new ships of Jacob van Heemskerck - class, which had better air defense capabilities.

Were between 1993 and 1997, four additional ships, which were observed in the Dutch navy decommissioned, sold to Greece, in 1997 and 1998, two decommissioned frigates were sold to the United Arab Emirates. The last four ships of the class went to her decommissioning in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2004 also to Greece.

Technology

The frigates Kortenaer class are 130 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and displace with a draft of 4.4 meters maximum of 3800 tons standard. The drive of the vessels is carried out by a COGOG system, two Rolls- Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines each with 4,900 hp are used speed at cruising speed to 20 knots, two Rolls- Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines each with 25,700 hp bring the ships to their top speed of 30 nodes. The range is 4700 nautical miles at 16 knots cruising speed.

The armament consists of an Oto Melara 76 mm Compact gun on the front deck and a Goalkeeper short-range defense system on the hangar roof, which was replaced by Phalanx CIWS on vessels sold to Greece. For the anti-ship use, the frigates equipped with two quad starter for RGM -84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. For use against air targets located in front of the bridge, a Mk 29 octuple launcher for RIM -7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles. Four torpedo tubes for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes complement the armament.

In the hangar on the aft deck two Westland Sea Lynx helicopters can be carried, but in the peace operation is just a helicopter on board.

A LW 08 Long Range Air Surveillance Radar and a WM25 search and tracking radar provide data for the SEWACO II computer system with Link 11 data link and satellite communications. A Scout navigation radar supports navigation of the ship. A Westinghouse AN/SQS-509-Bugsonar allows the detection of underwater targets.
