Jacobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus

Tabernaemontanus, actually Jacob Dietrich, Jacob Ditter / Diether and Jacob Theodor (* 1522 in Bad Bergzabern; † August 1590 in Heidelberg ) was a botanist, physician and professor of medicine and botany. The name Tabernaemontanus is a Latin form of the name Bergzabern.

Life

Jacob Theodor went to Strasbourg to school and was active in 1538, among others, as herbalists in Wissembourg (Alsace ). In 1540 he began studying medicine at Padua and later in Montpellier at Guillaume Rondelet. 1548 he returned to White Castle, where he worked as a herbalist again. 1538, 1548 and 1557 it is occupied as a pharmacist in White Castle. In 1549 he first met the botanist and physician Hieronymus Bock, as its ' Discipel ' ( students) in 1588, he referred to his herb book in the preface. He was also in contact with other contemporary botanists as Otto Brunfels, Adam Lonitzer and Leonhart Fuchs.

1552, he was there during a plague epidemic, inter alia, from Saarbruecken to Bergzabern go and wrote in 1553 a first book, Certain Practick, the treatment advice Pestkranker.

Jacob Theodor, who had argued Hieronymus Bock 1551/52 the personal physician of Philip II, Count of Nassau- Saarbrücken, was in 1554, his successor, but already in the same year returned to White Castle. From 1561 to 1580 he was physician to the Prince-Bishop of Speyer and provost of the monastery White Castle, Marquard of Hattstein. On August 26, 1562, he enrolled as Jacobus Theodorus at the University of Heidelberg since his studies were not recognized at other European universities in Germany.

1573 he received his doctorate of medicine.

Named after Tabernaemontanus taxa

Charles Plumier named in his honor the genus Tabernaemontana the plant family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.

After Tabernaemontanus among others, the following taxa are named: Spring Cinquefoil Potentilla tabernaemontani and salt Teichbinse Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani.
