Jacquemart (bellstriker)

Jacquemart ( portmanteau word from French Jacques (Jacob ) and marteau (Hammer) ) is the name for a male figure that strikes a bell in large tower clocks with the hammer (bell bat ). Sometimes Jacquemart is accompanied by a female Jacqueline and their two children Jacquelin and Jacquelinette.

Etymology

Whether the common in German-speaking expression Jacquemart can be attributed to a " Mechanicus " or a bell ringer named " Jacquemart " is unclear.
