Jacques Bertin

Jacques Bertin ( born July 27, 1918 in Maisons- Laffitte; † 3, 2010 in Paris ) was a French cartographer who " graphique semiology " with his book 1967 ( German edition 1974) first a standard work on the graphic theory and visualization written in general.

He developed the theory of " graphical variables ", in which he shows that a map sign of color, shape, pattern, brightness, direction and size can be assembled. Depending on the level of measurement of data to be displayed, he proposes a specific use of the graphic variable.

In 1993 he was awarded with the Mercator Medal of the German Society of Cartography. In 1999 he also received the Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal of the International Cartographic Association.
