Jacques Moderne

Jacques Moderne (* 1500 in Pinguente, today Buzet; † after 1560 in Lyon) was a French music publisher and printer of Italian origin. After Pierre Attaignant he was the second most important French publishers of his time.

Life

About his early life, there are no testimonials. The specification Jacobus de Modernus Pinguento in early prints suggesting to his birthplace in Istria. Presumably, he has spent his apprenticeship in Venice. The first mention of Modern published in 1523 to the 1560s - years in the control directory of Lyon, which led him as a bookseller. 1526 he first came out as a publisher.

Work

The largest part of contemporary publications made ​​from printed music, masses, motets, chansons and instrumental works. Among his well-known publications include two missals with cantus planus chants ( 1530 ), eight motets books ( 1532-1542 ), including the four collections of Motetti del fiore, and the Chanson book series Le parangon of chansons ( 1538-1543 ). From Parangon eleven volumes have been preserved. A total of about 50 printed Modern music collections with more than 800 pieces. More than half of these were previously unpublished. A variety of other works, which were later reprinted by other publishers appear at Modern for the first time. They are of music historical value as they demonstrate that some composers such as Pierre de Villiers, Eustorg de Beaulieu, Dambert and Henry Fresneau have worked at that time in Lyon. Two issues of Modern comprise exclusively masses, motets and Magnificat settings of Pierre Colin, whose compositions also appeared in other collector editions. The majority of authors, however, were at that time already internationally renowned composers, among them Franco- Flemish and Nicolas Gombert, Adrian Willaert, Jacob Arcadelt, Jean Lhéritier and jachet of Mantua and the Paris School of Claudin de Sermisy, Jean Maillard, Sandrin, Pierre Certon and Clément Janequin.
