Jaime Prieto Amaya

Jaime Prieto Amaya ( born March 27, 1941 in Bogotá, † August 26, 2010 ) was a Colombian theologian and Roman Catholic Bishop of Cúcuta.

Life

Jaime Prieto Amaya attended the minor seminary in the Colombian capital Bogotá and studied at the seminary philosophy and theology. He received on 14 August 1965, and was ordained priest incardinated in the diocese Facatativá. He worked as a Vicar, later chartered accountant and notary of the diocesan curia.

Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Barrancabermeja in 1993 in the north of Bogota. He received his episcopal consecration on December 11, 1993 Archbishop Paolo Romeo, Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia; Co-consecrators were retired bishop Facatativá, Hernando Velásquez Lotero, and Luis Gabriel Romero Franco, acting Bishop of Facatativá. From 1993 to 1996 he was secretary of the Commission for Social Pastoral Council of Latin American Bishops ( CELAM) and later pastor of the Cathedral of Facatativá. Prieto Amaya from 2003 to 2006, President of the Junta Directiva del Consorcio Desarrollo y Paz, an initiative for Development and Peace in Magdalena Medio in the province of Antioquia, a bloody battle with the Medellín Cartel. He was 1996-2005 President of the Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Social in Colombia and since 2009 President of Social Affairs of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia.

2008, by Pope Benedict XVI. the appointment as Bishop of Cúcuta; The inauguration took place on 7 February 2009.

Jaime Prieto Amaya died from the effects of gastrointestinal problems.
