Jakov Gotovac

Jakov Gotovac ( born October 11, 1895 in Split, Austria - Hungary, now Croatia, † October 16, 1982 in Zagreb) was Croatian composer and conductor.

Life

Jakov Gotovac studied in Split at Antun Dobronic, Josip Hatze Cyril and Methodius Hrazdíra, since 1920 with Joseph Marx in Vienna. In 1922, he starred in the Philharmonic Society in Šibenik and conducted in the period from 1923 to 1958 at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. In addition, he directed several choirs, including the student choir Mladost - Balkans and the choir Vladimir Nazor.

Gotovac was one of the first representatives of a Croatian national late-romantic style. His vocal works are often texts of folk poetry based; and although he rarely used original folk music, has shaped his musical language strong folkloristic. His greatest success was in 1935, first performed opera Ero the rogue, which was enacted in more than 80 European theaters. Gotovac created exclusively vocal and orchestral works.

After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.
