James A. Allison

James Ashbury Allison ( born August 11, 1872 in Marcellus, Michigan; † August 3, 1928 in Indianapolis, son of Noah and Myra Allison ) was an American businessman and entrepreneur.

James Allison has worked with 12 years in the family business, the Allison Coupon Company, and took over the company in 1890 after the death of his father. Together with Carl Fisher and Percy Avery he improved the carbide lamp, so that they could be easily used as headlights on motor vehicles. For the production of the Concentrated Acetylene Company was founded, which produced from 1904 Prest -O -Lite headlights and was able to achieve an extraordinary economic success.

1907 married Sarah Allison Cornelius.

Together with Arthur Newby and Frank Wheeler founded Fisher, Avery and Allison 1910 the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where since 1911, every year the 500 - mile race is run. 1927 Allison was the sole manager. In conjunction with the race track he had opened a tuning operation on 14 September 1915 from the Allison Engine Company emerged Indianapolis Speedway Team Company.

His house, Riverdale, achieved international renown for its architecture and horticulture.

1928 he had divorced his wife Sarah and married a month later his former employees Lucile Musset. In the summer of 1928, he died of pneumonia, only a week after his second marriage. Allison was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
