James Chirillo

James Louis Chirillo ( born 2 May 1953 in Waltham ( Massachusetts)) is an American jazz guitarist, banjo player, arranger and composer.

Life and work

James Chirillo grew up in Bellevue (Washington ) and had lessons in his hometown and in Seattle; He then studied the mid- 1970s music (composition and guitar) at the University of North Texas and in New York at John Carisi, Bill Finegan ( arrangement and composition ) and Remo Palmier ( guitar). During this time he joined, among others as an accompanist to the singer Vic Damone. During his military service he was a 1979-82 member of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point band. After his discharge from the army in 1982 he moved to New York City. There he took lessons with Tiny Grimes, with whom he performed well. 1985/86 he was a member of Benny Goodman's last band; 1987-91 he played in Buck Clayton Orchestra, with whom he went on a European tour in 1991. With Claude Williams, he appeared at the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President Clinton. He also worked with Ken Peplowski, Loren Schoenberg, Bob Wilber and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Benny Carter, the Lincoln Center Jazz Band under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. From 1992 to 1999 he was a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, which was conducted by Gunther Schuller and David Baker. In 2011 he worked at Ryan True Dells Centennial - with Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans. 2000 appeared on the label nail Heyer his album Sultry Serenade. Chirillo lives in Teaneck since 1993.

Chirillo worked as a musician even in two Woody Allen films, 1996 Everyone Says I Love You as a guitarist and banjo player and 1999 the soundtrack of Sweet and Lowdown as rhythm guitarist for the standard " Sweet Georgia Brown".
