James Daniel Niedergeses

James Daniel Low Geses ( born February 2, 1917 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, † November 16, 2007 in Nashville, Tennessee) was the ninth Roman Catholic Bishop of Nashville.

Life

James Daniel Low Geses was born the eldest of seven children in a farming family. From 1935 he attended Father Ryan High School in Nashville, from 1937 he studied at the seminary of St. Bernard College in Alabama and St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. Lower Geses received on May 20, 1944, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Then he was eleven years in Chattanooga in parish ministry as well as a hospital and prison chaplain. He also taught for 17 years at Father Ryan in Nashville. He was involved in particular in the ecumenical movement and served as chairman of the " Clergy Association of Greater Chattanooga " spokesman of the Christian churches.

1975 Pope Paul VI named. him as Bishop of Nashville. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Louisville, Thomas Joseph McDonough, on 20 May 1975. Were co-consecrators his predecessor, Bishop Joseph Aloysius Durick, and the Bishop of Evansville, Francis Raymond Shea. Lower Geses founded in Tennessee many new parishes during his time as bishop. He was also the founder in 1988 of the new Diocese of Knoxville.

In 1992, Pope John Paul II, his resignation for health reasons instead. He died after a long illness at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
