James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton

James Douglas-Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton, 4th Duke of Brandon, 6th Marquess of Clydesdale, 5th Earl of Lanark and 6th Earl of Arran and Cambridge KT (* July 5, 1724; † January 17, 1758 in Great Tew ), was a Scottish nobleman.

James was a son of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton and his first wife Anne Cochrane. At his birth, he received the title of Marquess of Clydesdale. With the death of his father he became in 1742 the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon.

Hamilton was educated at Winchester and Oxford. Since 1743 he was honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford. He died 33 years old from the effects of a cold, he incurred on the hunt.

James married the famous beauty Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon later, (1733-1790), daughter of Colonel John Gunning, who married after the early death of her husband in a second marriage in 1759 to John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll. William Hamilton had with her the following children:

  • Elizabeth (1753-1797), married in 1774 Edward Smith Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby
  • James (1755-1769), 7th Duke of Hamilton
  • Douglas (1756-1799), 8th Duke of Hamilton
