James Hanson, Baron Hanson

James Edward Hanson, Baron Hanson ( born January 20, 1922 in Huddersfield, † 1 November 2004 Newbury ) was a successful British entrepreneur.

James Hanson, son of a transporter, was raised in 1983 to a life peer as Baron Hanson of Edgerton in the County of West Yorkshire. He bought companies, renovated them and sold some at a profit. The rest he divided into a growing conglomerate Hanson plc. The total value of his companies was estimated at about 11 billion pounds. After the takeover of the tobacco company Imperial Tobacco in the early 1990s, the star of the billionaire began to decline, as the attempt to take over the chemical giant Imperial Chemical Industries failed. In the UK, Hanson did forth by generous donations to political parties. He was a major supporter of the Conservative Party of Margaret Thatcher and a strong opponent of the European Union.

For a short time Hanson was engaged to Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn. Hanson was known by the nickname " Lord, Money Bag ".

Lord Hanson died at the age of 82 years of cancer.
