James I. Van Alen

James Isaac Van Alen (* 1776 in Kinderhook, New York, † December 23, 1870 in Newburgh, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1807 and 1809 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Martin Van Buren was his half brother.

Career

James Isaac Van Alen was born during the War of Independence in Kinderhook. He attended community schools. Between 1797 and 1801 he served as town clerk (city clerk ) into Kinderhook active. He took part in the years 1801 and 1803 to the Constituent Assemblies of New York. Between 1801 and 1804 he was justice of the peace. He sat 1804 in the New York State Assembly. Between 1804 and 1808, and 1815-1822 he was Guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogate ) in Columbia County.

As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1806 Van Alen was in the eighth election district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry W. Livingston on March 4, 1807. He retired after the March 3, 1809 out of the Congress.

Van Alen died on December 23, 1870 in Newburgh and was then buried in Kinderhook on the same cemetery.
