James Kirkwood, Sr.

James Kirkwood ( born February 22, 1875 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA; † August 24, 1963 in Woodland Hills, California ) was an American actor and film director. He appeared in over 230 films.

Life

The long-time stage actor Kirkwood came from Broadway, where he had the actor Henry B. Walthall know in common appearances in the play The Great Divide by William Vaughn Moody, to film. He began his film career in 1909 at the Biograph Company, where Walthall already worked as an actor. In many early films of David Wark Griffith as The Red Man 's View and A Corner in Wheat (both 1909), but also in the production founded in 1914 Star Home, Sweet Home, Kirkwood worked with. In 1912 he turned to the Director; until 1914 it emerged nine films starring Mary Pickford, including Cinderella (1914 ) with Pickford 's first husband Owen Moore as Prince. In 1919, he was the directing again and moved solely on acting. Among his important films of the sound era My Pal the King ( 1932) part with Tom Mix and Mickey Rooney. Until the 1950s, Kirkwood was most common in supporting roles, most recently in television productions.

From 1905 to 1910, from 1922 to 1925 and from 1934 to 1936 played James Kirkwood on Broadway.

From 1923 to 1929 James Kirkwood was married to the actress Lila Lee. Their only child together, James Kirkwood, Jr. was born in 1924 and became a playwright. He was involved among other things, A Chorus Line.

He was buried in the cemetery "Holy Cross Cemetery " in Culver City, California.
