James Lawrence Getz

James Lawrence Getz ( born 14 September 1821 in Reading, Pennsylvania, † December 25, 1891 ) was an American politician. Between 1867 and 1873 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Getz graduated from a classical education and worked in the newspaper industry. In 1840 he co-founded the newspaper Reading Gazette. Later he bought yet the sheet Jefferson Democrat. These two newspapers he united under the name Reading Gazette and Democrat. In 1868 he sold his shares in this company. James Getz also studied law until 1846 and was admitted to the bar. But he has not practiced in this or any other legal profession. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the years 1856 and 1857 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania, which he was president in 1857.

In the congressional elections of 1866 Getz was in the eighth electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Sydenham Elnathan Ancona on March 4, 1867. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1873 three legislative periods. Until 1869, the work of the Congress of the tensions between the Republicans and President Andrew Johnson was charged, which culminated in a narrowly failed impeachment.

1872 renounced James Getz on another Congress candidate. In the following years he worked again in the newspaper industry. Since 1888, he served as Comptroller for the City of Reading. He is also passed on 25 December 1891.
