James Manning (minister)

James Manning ( born October 22, 1738 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey; † July 29, 1791 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) was an American pastor of the Baptist Church and a delegate to the Continental Congress.

Life

Mannig studied at the Hopewell Academy and the College of New Jersey. In 1763 he was ordained as a pastor in a Baptist church. He was appointed professor of the Philadelphia Baptist Association to Warren (Rhode Iceland ) to build a seminary. He also worked as a pastor and founded next to the Warren Baptist Association, a Latin school. In 1765 he became the first president of the College of Rhode Iceland. 1770 drew the College, which later became Brown University was established, to Providence.

From 1785 to 1786 Manning belonged to the Continental Congress as a representative of Rhode Island. He is in the United States as a champion of general education.
