James R. Ballantyne

James R. Ballantyne ( born December 13, 1813 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, † February 16, 1864 ) was a Scottish Orientalist, who was ibid. since 1841 director of the Queen 's College, Varanasi, India, and since 1856 professor of moral philosophy. In 1861 he returned to England and was appointed librarian of the India Office.

Ballantyne dealt with the essence of Indian thought and conveyed his findings to his compatriots. He provided thorough grammatical auxiliary books for teaching Sanskrit (2nd edition, Lond, 1873. ) In Hindi (2nd edition 1868), in Hindustani (ibid. 1838 and 1842), in Marathi (ibid. 1839); but especially he gave the Sanskrit grammar " Laghu Kaumudi " (with translation and commentary, 1849-52, 3 vols ) and the first part of Mahâbhâshva, the famous commentary on Panini's grammar (1856 ), out and provided valuable, mostly unfinished spending and translations of the main works of the philosophical school of the Indians. Intended for more counties are the works. " Synopsis of science in Sanskrit and English " (Varanasi 1856) and "Christianity Compared with Hindu philosophy" (ibid. 1859), in which he strove to impart European science with the Indian.
