James Shirley

James Shirley, gelegentl. James Sherley (* September 18, 1596 in London, † before October 29, 1666, buried in London ) was an English writer.

Life

Very little is known about Shirley's childhood and youth. He studied at the universities of Oxford (St John 's College ) and Cambridge (St Catharine 's College ) and finished this to 1618th During this time Shirley began to doubt in matters of faith and converted to Catholicism soon.

1623 Shirley was for two years a position as lecturer at St. Alban's Grammar School. He then settled in London and was able to soon debut with a play.

1636-1640 Shirley spent in Ireland, where his colleague and friend John Ogilby some of Shirley's plays staged in his theater in Dublin. During the year 1640 he returned to England and settled back in London as a writer down.
