James Stewart, the Black Knight of Lorn

James Stewart of Lorne, ( * ca 1395; † ca 1448 ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family, called " the Black Knight of Lorne " ( the Black Knight of Lorne ).

James was a son of Sir John Stewart, Lord Lorne and his wife Isabel de Ergadia. His father had received the lordship of Lorn and his brother was of Scottish Ambassador to England. When Lord of Lorne followed in 1421 after the death of James' father, whose older brother Robert.

James Stewart was a faithful companion in arms of the Black Douglas and tried this with the fall of the Scottish regent Sir Alexander Livingston of Callendar. After his liberation, he eventually married the Scottish ex-Queen (Queen - Dowager ) Joan Beaufort in 1439 with papal dispensation. With her he had three children:

  • James († 1499 ), 1st Earl of Buchan 1469
  • Andrew (1443-1501), Bishop of Moray in 1483

James Stewart was killed during a trip to England by Flemish pirates.
