James T. Patterson (historian)

James Tyler Patterson ( born 1935 ) is an American historian and professor at Brown University. It deals with the history of America in particular, in the 20th century.

His father, J. Tyler Patterson sat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut and was for a time the speaker. James Patterson visited Williams College with a bachelor 's degree in 1957 and was then a journalist at The Hartford Courant. In 1960 he continued his studies at Harvard University, where he received his master's degree in 1961 (MA) and in 1964 received his doctorate. He then taught at Indiana University and was from 1972 professor at Brown University. He retired as Ford Foundation Professor in 2002.

Having initially focused on political history as the New Deal, he later turned to more social history, such as the fight against poverty in America, the social upheavals of the 1960s, the social situation of African Americans and cancer in American culture. He is also known for his two volumes on post-war history of the United States in the series Oxford History of the United States.

In 1968 he was Guggenheim Fellow.
