James Thomas, 1st Viscount Cilcennin

James Purdon Lewes Thomas, 1st Viscount Lampeter (* October 13, 1903; † July 13, 1960 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party. From 1951 to 1956 he was First Lord of the Admiralty.

Life

He received at Rugby School His education; then he studied at Oriel College, Oxford. From 1929 to 1931 he was private secretary to Stanley Baldwin, the chairman of the Conservative Party. In 1931 he was Member of Parliament for the district of Hereford. Between 1932 and 1935 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS ) by James Henry Thomas in the Dominion ministry, and later the Colonial Office, then 19936 there. In 1939, he appeared as Lord of the Treasury back to the government a, a post which he retained even when Winston Churchill became prime minister. In 1943 he was financial secretary of the Admiralty in 1951 and First Lord of the Admiralty. This he remained until 1956. 1955 he was created Viscount Lampeter, of Hereford in the County of Hereford, appointed.

Thomas died in 1960 at the age of 56 years. He was unmarried. The title of Viscount Lampeter went out then.
