Jamie L. Whitten Building

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Administration Building, since 1995, Jamie L. Whitten Building is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. The Administration Building is located on the north side of Independence Avenue and extends into the National Mall, where it opposite the National Museum of Natural History is located. It is the only building on the National Mall, which is not intended for visit by the general public. It was the first major building in the Beaux- Arts style in Washington, and so put the prototype for future buildings in the Federal Triangle. East and west wings of the building were the first office buildings of the Federal Government of the United States of reinforced concrete. The building was registered on January 24, 1974 to the National Register of Historic Places.

The location of the building on the National Mall was controversial because he was not in accordance with the McMillan Plan, including the National Mall without disturbing buildings. The Administration Building was renamed in 1995 in honor of former Congressman Jamie L. Whitten of Mississippi. Whitten was chairman of the United States House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.
