Jämjö

Jämjö is a locality ( Tätort ) in the municipality of Karlskrona in the southern Swedish province of Blekinge County, the historical province of Blekinge. Jämjö is located on the E22 ( Europaväg 22) between Karlskrona and Kalmar, near the coast of the Baltic Sea.

History

The name Jämjö probably due to a field name. An indication of this is found in the local parlance, which uses the local preposition on instead of in. The residents of Jämjö so has always dwell on Jämjö.

Find on a map undated at the site of today Jämjös only a church and a single house, which joins the road from Karlskrona to Kalmar. The letters on this card is Jemjö. Further west, outside the present-day village, a village is composed of five buildings, which is described with Jemj. The card itself is, however, entitled to the letters Iemiö Sockn ( parish Iemiö ). On another map from 1688 the spelling Jämbgiö is used, and in 1758 the place as it is today, Jämjö is written. Also on this card is only the church, east of it, a guest house ( Jämjö Krog ) and also a bridge that leads to the west of the church on a river, located. The medieval stone church was around 1795-1822 and finally to the present church built new.

From 1899 to 1965 Jämjö was opened up by the railway. The railroad was mainly for local small industry, the cement plant and the starch factory of great importance. After the train has stopped, and the old station was demolished in 1981. Today, only a Bahnremiese and the street name reminds Stationsvägen ( Station Road ) to the railroad.

Current

The surroundings of Jämjö is agricultural. In addition to grain farming and dairy farming. On Jämjö a variety small businesses have, aside from agriculture, settled. As a major employer, the textile service company Berendsen has a location on Jämjö.

Located along the E22, which shares Jämjö into a northern and a southern part, the resort center. It basically consists of a supermarket, a parking lot, gastronomic small businesses, a health food store and the old school house, this is the school for the lower grades today. In 1973, the new middle and upper school building completed in the southern district and named after the writer Ragnar Jändel. Other notable buildings are the church in the western district, the water tower on a hill north of the town and the pedestrian overpass over the E22 in the center of the village.

On Jämjö there is further a library, a kindergarten, a health center with pharmacy, a center for dentistry, a retirement home, a people house and other service providers.

Sports

Jämjö has an active football club and an active skater scene. There is also an orienteering club and a handball club.
