Jamrud

Jamrud ( جمرود ) is a city in a tribal area of ​​Pakistan's Federally Administered in the Khyber Agency, one of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan (FATA ). The place is located at the beginning of the Khyber Pass in the Hindu Kush Mountains. The city has a road and rail link to Peshawar Landi Kotal and which is close to the border with Afghanistan. In Jamrud is the headquarters of the Khyber Rifles.

Location

Since Jamrud is located near the Khyber Pass, the city and the nearby fort of Jamrod both the trade routes between Central Asia and South Asia as well as the importance of military strategy. The place is 17 km from Peshawar and is located at 461 meters above sea level.

History

British time

Jamrud was an area of strategic importance and served as a base for the British Indian Army during the period of the British Raj. In the military operations from 1878 to 1879 the place for border expansion of the British dominion in the direction of Afghanistan was significant. The area also formed the basis for the operations of the Tirah Campaign, a religious war of Afridi, in the years 1897 to 1898. In the resort, who had in 1901 1,848 inhabitants, the headquarters of the paramilitary border troops, the Khyber Rifles, and the toll station was to use the Khyber Pass. Even today, the place, because of its location on a main access routes to Afghanistan is of great strategic importance.

Others

In the village today is a train station for the train of the Khyber Pass Railway. This train route can be traveled by tourists, depending on the security situation after Landi Kotal until just before the border of Afghanistan with a steam locomotive. In the area of Jamrud there are deposits of marble.
