Ján Botto

Ján Botto ( born January 27, 1829 in Vyšný SKALNÍK, Empire of Austria, now Slovakia, † April 28, 1881 in Banska Bystrica, Austria - Hungary) was a Slovak romantic poets, writers of Stur - generation and co-founder of the first Slovak school in Revúca.

Life

Botto was born in a peasant family and was the second son of the family. He attended a grammar school in Ožďany and since 1843 at the evangelical lyceum to Leutschau, where he became a member of the Slovak national movement was for the first time and wrote his first works. After that, he opted for the metrology and came to Pest and remained there until 1851.

After finishing his studies, he worked as a land surveyor in different, then Upper Hungary, now Slovak cities such as Martin, Schemnitz and Neusohl and rural areas of today's Central Slovakia. In addition, he was also active in the literature and reached its peak with the publication of the collection Spevy Jána Botta in 1880. He died on 28 April 1881 in Banska Bystrica, where he also has his tomb is located.

Work

His work can be classified in the period of Romanticism. His first poems were published in Levočské magazines, other works in various Slovak literary magazines such as Sokol and Orol. The main motive was the Slovak folk culture with patriotic symbols. In addition, he also wrote about current issues of his time. Botto is most known for his poem SMRT Jánošíková ( Janosiks death), where all threads aforementioned occur; Furthermore, the ballads are present in his work.

His translations are mainly from the Slavic (A. Mickiewicz, AS Khomyakov ) and the Hungarian literature ( S. Petőfi ).

Appreciation

The central Slovakian community Bottovo, just a few kilometers from the place of birth is named after him.

In 1979 his portrait was placed on the 100 crown coin.
