Jan Gehl

January Gehl ( born September 17, 1936) is a Danish architect and urban planner from Copenhagen. Focuses in particular Gehl on improving urban quality for pedestrians and cyclists.

Life

In 1960 Gehl concluded his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked from then until 1966 as an architect. Gehl married soon after graduating from a psychologist. This had a great impact on its planning activity. By his own admission, much of the conversation revolved around the question of why architects are not interested in people. 1966 Gehl received a research grant and was a visiting professor in Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Norway.

The Strøget in Copenhagen as the longest pedestrian street in Europe goes back to Gehl. His book Public Spaces, Public Life describes the example of Copenhagen, such as from a car-friendly city, a pedestrian-friendly city has become within 40 years.

Gehl manages urban development projects around the world. He worked in 2004 a study for Transport for London on the quality of public space in London. In 2007 he was commissioned by the City Department of Transportation of New York, there to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

Which he led office Gehl Architects with works in the Danish Cycling Embassy (Cycling Embassy of Denmark, CED ), to disseminate knowledge and experience in the promotion of cycling worldwide.
