Jan Swart van Groningen

Jan Swart van Groningen (* 1500 in Groningen, † after 1562 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch painter and engraver.

Life

Not much is known about the life of Groningen. According to the artist's lexicon Thieme -Becker, he is said to have also worked under the name Jan Vredemann. 1522 he worked in Gouda, later in Antwerp, where he died. He attended possibly Venice. His work shows some familiarity with the style of the Italian High Renaissance. Most woodcuts in the Dutch edition of the Bible of 1528, which was published in Antwerp, come from him.

Works

In Arenberg archive, Enghien, Belgium there is a small portable altar by Jan Swart van Groningen, the only image of the artist that is signed and dated: Jan de Svært alias van Groeningen mefecit A 1562, which raises the previous research on the pile. The triptych shows in early baroque style on the middle panel crucifixion ( crucifix after an engraving by Giulio Bonasone ) with Mary and John. On the side panels are on the left of the founders Francisco de Verdugo with a after a nachempfundenenen of Federico Barocci Figurkomposition St. Francis and on the right wing, the wife of Francisco Dorthea von Mansfeld with a hl. Dorothea shown. On the back of the central panel we find the signature on the back and side panels, the family crest of the founder.
