Jan van den Hoecke

Jan van den Hoecke (* 1611 in Antwerp, † 1651 ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Jan van den Hoecke, brother of Robert van den Hoecke, was at first a pupil of his father Kaspar van den Hoecke, then he was informed by Peter Paul Rubens, in whose workshop he worked for some time. In 1635 he was employed on the decorations for the collection of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand, the brother of King Philip IV of Spain, in Antwerp.

Shortly afterwards, about 1637, he went to Italy and was then ten years in Austria for the Emperor Ferdinand III. active. 1647 he returned to Antwerp and was court painter to the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, for he executed numerous religious and biblical paintings and portraits.

In his portraits, he joins more to the painter Anthony van Dyck as on Rubens. He also painted altarpieces for Flemish churches. From the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, a Madonna and Child, an allegory of transience, the allegories of six months of night and day have come in the Vienna Belvedere except two portraits. The museum in Antwerp has a St. Francis before the Madonna and Child.
